Madani govt improvements for 2024: delegates urge

PUTRAJAYA — PKR delegates have put forth their hopes and suggestions for the Madani government to improve the country’s standard of living in the next few years.

Delegates from the Women’s and Youth wings expressed their views on how political change should be made to ensure the longevity and prosperity of the nation.

Women’s Wing:

Sabah Marudu PKR Women’s deputy chief Saloma Salmin said that she hopes the economy can be improved by eliminating subsidised items.

“Right now, we hear many complaints about the economy in terms of oil, food and beverages. People have voiced out saying that there is a price increase.

“I hope that the economy throughout Malaysia can be improved, in which things that are subsidised will be eliminated, so that the economy will be more stable and receive support by all Malaysian citizens,” she said.

She said that she also hopes for women to become more advanced as they previously had a slight weakness in administration, adding that she hopes for women to be more active in PKR.

She said that she chose to support PKR because the party is more towards anti-corruption.

She also said that it is a pleasure to be in the government now, as the Madani government has many plans for the development of the country as well as its states.

Sabah Keningau PKR Women’s committee member Magdalene Sandy, 66, has been in the party for almost a decade and hopes that more help will be extended to women under 40 years old and for fresh graduates.

She said that she also hopes more industries will open so that the number of youths landing a job will increase.

She said she expects the Madani government to finish fixing all loopholes in Malaysian laws in the near future, and that she is grateful to be in the government right now.

“When PKR used to be in the opposition, we would not be respected if we tried to approach members from other parties.

“Now, I feel like I can speak to other party members and receive the same level of respect as them,” she said.

She said she supports PKR because its leader (Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) started from the grassroots level, and that he understands the struggles of the common folk.

She added that she believes that the leadership of PMX will bring restoration to the country.

Youth Wing:

Johor PKR youth secretary Venissha Nirel John Kennedy, 26, joined the party when she was as young as 18, and said that she hopes for more young leaders who won’t compromise too much in their principles.

“Right now, the pendulum is swinging and our principles are getting a bit questionable because we have to compromise here and there. So, I hope we have more young leaders who are not afraid, or don’t fall into the trap of compromise as what most would call ‘politik lama’ (old politics).

“In the first year where we have managed to identify a lot of the root causes (of this nation’s issues), we have been struggling because there were a lot of things left behind that we cannot recover.

“As an example, the recent auditor-general's report showed that out of 208 billion, there’s over 704 million of taxpayers money missing, and this is not even the full overview of it yet.

“Now that we have identified such a huge gap, we should find long-term solutions to have money spent back into the country to return the taxpayers’ money,” she said.

She also said that she expects the government to move forward in boosting the local economy, not just with foreign investment but also by empowering the local community to provide more job opportunities.

She added that she chose to support PKR after reading one of Anwar’s books about bridging the gap between the rich and the poor, and realised that his principles aligned with hers the most out of all other political parties.

Parit PKR youth chief Mohamad Haidir Mahmud, 30, has been loyal to the party since 2020.

He said that he hopes the Madani government will diversify activities and programs in his area to decrease the marginalization of women and youth categories in his area.

He also said that for the next five years, he hopes that the government will control the issue of food quantity to ensure that there is enough stock available for everyone.
